The Northwestern part of Vietnam is one of the most interesting and beautiful areas of South East Asia. Vietnam is home to 54 ethnic groups and the northwestern part of the country is an exciting place to see the lives, customs and cultures of some of Vietnam’s ethnic minorities. In this part of the country the minorities still dress in their traditional colorful clothing – especially the women. Each minority group has its own distinct color and style of dress. On the Northwest tour you will both do a minority trek and stay with some of the tribes in the Mai Chau and Son La area and explore some of the country’s most spectacular scenery and home to many distinct hill tribes.

Day 1: Ha Noi - Mai Chau Valley - Home stay (L, D)

8:00 A.M Pick up from your hotel and hit the road through the infamous traffic of Hanoi. Heading towards Hoa Binh Province, we pass through passes and valleys then wind our way downhill to Mai Chau valley. We will spend the afternoon to walk around the two connecting villages, learn more about the ethnic Thai people and finally experience their. Enjoy dinner followed by traditional dances and a taste of the local rice wine, an experience in itself. Sleep well in Home stay, preparation for tomorrow.


Day 2: Mai Chau - Son La (B, L, D)

After breakfast at local family- departure for Son La. Stop over on the half way in Moc Chau town. Taste the special Sweeten Milk Cake. Arrive in Son La at the afternoon. Visit the Prison Museum in Son La which remains as a poignant reminder of the inequities of the former French colonial rule. Dinner and sleep at the Cong Doan Hotel.

Day 3: Son La - Dien Bien Phu (B, L, D)

Breakfast at hotel then drive to the colorful market of Thuan Chau. Visit blue H’mong village at Pha Din Pass, lunch in Tuan Giao before making our way to Dien Bien Phu. It was here that that French planned to lure the Viet Minh, led by Ho Chi Minh into the valley by sending of general Giap who somehow managed to place the Vietnamese artillery on the surrounding ridges, overnight in Muong Thanh Hotel.

Day 4: Dien Bien Phu Battlefield - Muong Lay ( B, L, D)


On this day you spend the whole morning to visit some special old war places such as A1, C1 hill, De Castres's bookie and Muong Thanh airfield. Our tour guide will tell you details about the campaign against the French in 1054. Come back to hotel, have lunch and depart for Muong lay at the afternoon.

Day 5: Dien Bien Phu - Ha Noi (B, L)


After breakfast, check out hotel and go back to Hanoi. Keep your heath for the long distance to go back to Hanoi (About 500 km). Have lunch in Son La. Arrive in Hanoi at the late afternoon. Check in the hotel. Tour end

Day 1: Hanoi - Mai Chau (L, D)
In the morning, The B Tourist Vietnam’s tour guide and driver will pick you up at your hotel at 8:00 and transfer to Mai Chau (150km). On the way, stop over for taking photos.
Arrival in Mai Chau, take a boat along the Ma River (3 hours), then trekking to visit the White Thai. Have diner in the village.
Overnight home-stay in Lac village.


Day 2: Mai Chau - Son La (B, L, D)
After breakfast, trekking to Mai Chau valley, visit Nhot and Na Phon village of Thai people. Then transfer to Son La (185km). On the way, stop over for taking photos and visit a suspension bridge and Back Thai village. Arrival in Son La, check in hotel.

Day 3: Son La - Dien Bien (B, L, D)
Morning visit to the provincial Museum and Son La Prison before transfer to Dien Bien (170km). On the way, stop over for taking photos, visit Thuan Chau Market, Pha Din Pass. Arrival in Dien Bien, check in hotel and visit Dien Bien Phu Museum, Colonel Christian de Castries, Muong Thanh airport, Hill A1.

Day 4: Dien Bien - Lai Chau (B, L, D)
Depart for Lai Chau (100km). Stop over for visiting village minority at Muong Lay (home to White H’Mong people).
Arrival in Lai Chau, take a boat along Da River. Visit White H’Mong people, Nam Ma village (Black Thai), explore around village and watching the daily life of ethnic minorities.
Overnight home-stay in Nam Ma village.


Day 5: Lai Chau - Sapa (B, L, D)
Transfer to Sapa (180km). On the way, visit H’Mong village and a suspension bridge. Stop - over at Hoang Lien Pass for taking photos and admiring the beautiful view of Hoang Lien Son Mountain. Visit Heaven Gate, Silver Waterfall and Tram Ton Pass. Arrival in Sapa, check in hotel.

Day 6: Sapa (B, L, D)
Free at your leisure, relaxing or visiting local market. Around 10am, trek to Lao Chai village of Black H’Mong people and Ta Van village of Dzay people where explore the daily life of these colorful minorities.

Day 7: Sapa - Bac Ha (Sunday only) (B, L, D)
After breakfast, visit Giang Ta Chai Village (Red Dzao people), visit also a waterfall and the rattan bridge.
In the afternoon, transfer to Bac Ha (110km). Stop over for taking photos, visit border gate Lao Cai. Arrive in Bac Ha, take a walk around town, visit the H’Mong King’s house.

Day 8: Bac Ha - Can Cau (Saturday only) (B, L, D)

Early in the morning, visit Can Cau Market where the Flower H’Mong minority is the most common, then back to Bac Ha for lunch.

Day 1: Hanoi - Mai Chau - Son La (L. D)

In the morning, The B Tourist Vietnam’s tour guide and driver will pick you up at your hotel and transfer to Son La town (320km) with stop for taking photos, experiencing hill tribes lifestyle. On the way, we stop in Mai Chau, the Lac and Pom Coong villages are famous with Thai people for visiting couple of hours, and have lunch with local food of them.

And then, keep traveling to Son La, take photos with local people.

Day 2: Son La - Lai Chau (Muong Lay) (B, L, D)


In the morning, visit French Prison, Son La Ethnology Museum. Then transfer to Muong Lay. On the way, stop for taking photos, visit some villages of Black Thai, and find out about some customary practices people here. Visit Tuan Chau Market, Pha Din Pass (1300m).
Have lunch in Tuan Giao and continue to Muong Lay. Check in hotel upon arrival.

Day 3: Muong Lay - Sapa (B, L, D)

Take bus to Tam Duong, enjoy Tinh Waterfall, have lunch in Tam Duong. In the afternoon, transfer to Sapa. Stop to visit Heaven Gate, the highest stretch of road in Vietnam as well as the provincial border of Lao Cai and Lai Chau provinces. Enjoy fantastic view over the valley with barbecue of local people. After that, visit The Silver Waterfall is located about a half hour from Sapa town which offers stunning views over surrounding mountains and lush forests belonging to Hoang Lien National Park. You are advised to stop by a farm for a cup of tea and talkwith people to understand their local life. Free time for walking around to discover Sapa town on your own, enjoy night market. Visitors can also join “Sapa Love Market” ( if it is Saturday).

Day 4: Sapa - Lao Chai - Ta Van - Cat Cat (B, L, D)


The day is devoted to a beautiful hike through the breathtaking scenery of Sa Pa valley. Start by road that descends in the wake of the street Cau May (6 km) En route, admire the rice terraces hidden behind mist of the morning, a truly awe-inspiring sight.

Follow a small track and cross MuongHoa River and pass well-tended rice terraces on your way to the Black Hmong village of Lao Chai. Continuing through the colorful rice terraces you will reach the village of Ta Van Giay. As you continue your trek along the MuongHoa River you will cross a small suspension bridge, roughly 2km from the settlement. Here you can discover a fascinating collection of rock carvings. These engravings depict some beautiful images of man, stilt houses and some beautiful decorative patterns. After taking a rest, car is ready for your journey back to Sapa town for dinner and accommodation.

Day 5: Sapa - Bac Ha - Ha Giang (B, L, D)

Starting from Sapa, you will first visit Bac Ha, enjoy an easy trek to Ban Pho village, visit some houses of Mong Flower and visit the old castle of the former H’mong King. Having Lunch in Bac Ha.
In the afternoon, We set off on a haft of day journey through Sin Man and Hoang Su Phi to Ha Giang town. The rough but scenic route traverses a dense jungle before crossing over a pass and ping down to Sin Man. Along the way we may encounter the Nung Ing, Tay, Red Dao, Dao Ao Dai, La Chi and Co Lao, just some of the many hill tribe groups who have settled in the area.

Day 6: Ha Giang - Dong Van-Meo Vac (B, L, D)

Starting from Ha Giang, you will stop in Quan Ba District to visit the Bo Y minority village, this area is wonderful weather around year, then process passing Sky gate where you can visit sky, Fairy Mountain, hand weaving village. Break in Yen Minh town. Continues to Meo Vac town, visit Dao minority house and we have chance to view Nho Que river with Ma Pileng point, view ancient valley from the top. After that we go to Sa Phin village to visit former Meo King palace.

Day 7: Meo Vac - Bao Lac - Nguyen Binh - Ba Be lake (B, L, D)


Today, the journey takes you through the rolling hills and the picturesque scenery to Ba Be National Park.
Roads are bumpy and zigzagging through the mountains. But the journey is more than rewarding. Meet the locals and learn more about the life and culture of the Hmong, Dao, Tay and Nung ethnic minorities who make for the main population in this region. Surely, your presence will attract the locals’ attention as this part of the country still receives few visitors. Depending on road and traffic conditions, we arrive in Ba Be by late afternoon or early evening.

Day 8: Ba Be Lake (B, L, D)

A day tour of Ba Be Lake, take a boat on Ba Be Lake, visit Puong grotto, Dau Dang waterfall, Window Islet and swimming. Then trek to Pac Ngoi village and explore the daily life of Tay. Dinner and saty over night at local home in Po Lu village.

Day 1: Ha Noi - Mai Chau (L, D)

Pick up at your hotel and leave at 8:00 this morning. The road from Hanoi to Hoa Binh o­n highway 6 has been upgraded. The pretty landscape is dotted with churches, pagodas and villages. You will stop to visit the Muong tribe en-route, then another break at Thung Khe Pass for the spectacular view of Mai Chau valley.
Have lunch in Mai Chau. Spend the afternoon for trekking away from the tourist track, close to Song Ma River. Here, you will discover the beauty of this valley and the culture of Thai people who is living in this area.
Tonight, you will have dinner and stay with a Thai family.

Day 2: Mai Chau - Son La (B, L, D)

Have breakfast at the home-stay before embark o­n a beautiful drive north to Son La. This good stretch of road is filled with stunning scenery, you will make frequent photo stops and visit to the minority villages of the H’mong and Black Thai.
Lunch is served at a local restaurant en-route. The highlight o­n your drive today will be a visit of a tea plantation in Moc Chau plateau. Here, you will find the best Vietnam teagrowing region, along the roads and o­n the hillsides. You will reach Son La in the afternoon. Dinner and stay overnight in Son La.

Day 3: Son La - Dien Bien (B, L, D)

Today you will travel o­n more winding & stunning roads, longer passes and see more colorful minority groups. Just as in the previous day, you may want to stop more often for pictures and visits the villagers to learn more about their rich cultures.
After lunch, the drive to the impressive Pha Din pass will be the highlight of the day.

Pha Din pass sits 1,000 meter or 3280 feet above the sea level. According to local legend, Pha Din means the connection between Heaven and Earth. Climbing and descending the slopes with the many bends and deep gorges is an unforgettable experience. You will reach Dien Bien Phu early in the afternoon and spend the rest of the day visiting the historical site of the Vietnamese / French war. Dien Bien Phu Museum and A 1 Hill are o­n the list to see.

Day 4: Dien Bien - Lai Chau (B, L, D)

After breakfast, you will have some free time before we begin another spectacular drive, passing the stunning gorges and the Nam Na River. There will be stops to visit the H’mong and ZDao villages o­n the way. Arrive in Lai Chau in early afternoon, have lunch & free rest of the afternoon in Lai Chau town to ralax. Dinner and stay overnight in Lai Chau.

Day 5: Lai Chau - Sapa (B, L, D)

The drive today is the highlight of this trip. The road is a bit bumpy at times but it compensates by the magnificent scenery of the surrounding fertile valley, pristine rivers and high mountains - the photographer’s dream. The 25 miles drive to Sapa goes up the ChinCo pass and Tram Son pass, the highest pass in Vietnam with the view to Fansipan Peak – The roof of “Indochine”. En-route is the beautiful areas of Heaven’s Gate and Silver Waterfall.
Nested in the spectacular valley near the border of China, Sapa is the premier destination of Northwest Vietnam. Built in 1922 it was the former hill station for the French colonists. Today, Sapa is a paradise for trekkers, thanks to its beautiful trekking routes, stunning rice terrace, colorful minority groups and the back of mountain Fansipan. At 3143 meters or 10,311 feet from sealevel, it is Vietnam’s highest peak.
You will reach Sapa in the afternoon and the rest of the day is free to explore o­n your own.

Day 6: Sapa Trekking (B, L, D)

After breakfast at the hotel, you will start the great trekking day downhill to the Muong Hoa valley. To begin the most beautiful trekking route in Vietnam. You will trek o­n dirt path away from tourist tracks, through pine forest, terraces and Hmong villages. You will visit a school in the village and have a picnic lunch by the river. In the afternoon, you will hike through the village of Zay and end of the hike today, Driver will pickup at Ta Van Bridge for the drive back to Sapa.
Evening, relax in the hotel area and have dinner o­n your own

Day 1: Ha Noi - Mai Chau - Pu Luong (L, D)

8:00 AM Our tour guide and driver pick you at the hotel and transfer to Mai Chau with spectacular views around every bend. Upon arrival at Pom Coong village in Mai Chau, take a short walk to visit the ethnic Thai people.
Lunch at local home.
2:00 PM, transfer to Phuc Tan Village where we will take a 2 to 3 hour walk through beautiful hill side villages, magnificent rice paddies to Hang Village. The highlight on this walk is experiencing the beauty of Pu Luong Nature Reserve, the everyday life and culture of the white Thai people. Become guests at a traditional Thai home on stilts.
Have a traditional dinner and stay the night.

Day 2: Pu Luong - Mai Chau - Ha Noi (B, L)


The daily life here starts early, it will be interesting for you to get up at the first sight of day light and take part in the activities in the morning, or take a stroll around Hang village before having breakfast with our new Thai friends.
8:00 AM start a trek inside the Pu Luong Nature Reserve (back on some of the same routes) then onto the main road, after a 3 hour walk, the driver will pick you up and transfer to the Pom Coong village for lunch.
Leave Mai Chau at 2:30 pm and end the trip in Hanoi by around 6:00 pm.

From Lai Chau to Sa Pa you pass through Tam Duong (formerly Binh Lu), and over the 1900 meter Tram Ton pass, Viet Nam's highest mountain pass and considered the most beautiful stretch of road in the country. Sa Pa is nestled at over 1600 meters in the breathtaking Hoang Lien Son Mountains. After lunch, take a short 3-hour trek down this stunning valley sculpted with steep rice terraces to Ta Van village for a home stay. Enjoy the savoury food and the hospitality of your Dzay hosts.

Day 5: Sapa - Hill Tribe Market - Bac Ha (B, L, D)

Today is dedicated to one of the 3 remarkable hill tribe markets of the region(Can Cau, Coc Ly, Bac Ha) where the Flower H'mong ethnic minority people is the major! The Flower H'mong girls dressing like colorful like butterflies filling up all the markets making a really really impressive scenery. Beside the Flower H'mong people, the markets are also attended by a dozen of other tribes namely Chinese, Nhang, Dzao, Nung, Phu La, Thai and King (or Viet). The markets which take place once a week are really a cross culture
communication of ethnic minority groups. They are really worth visiting. After lunch time at the markets, you can follow the hill tribes to their villages or take a drive to the further villages. Back to Bac Ha in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight at hotel in Bac Ha.

Day 6: Bac Ha - Hanoi (B, L)

Day 1: Hanoi - Thac Ba lake (L, D)

Heading out of Hanoi city, we follow the Red River to avoid the city traffic jams. This windy river road will give a taste of things to come. Our journey takes you along the river to discover the agriculture civilization of Viet and Muong people in the Red River Delta. We will stop to visit their traditional houses and villages on the way. The car stops in Yen Bai Town where you will take a three-hours cruise across the lake, a dugout canoe is provided for an excursion to Thac Ba Lake containing crystal clear water where there is an
opportunity for a refreshing swim.

Day 2: Yen Bai - Bac Ha (B, L, D)

Bidding farewell to Yen Bai, we continue further north to Bac Ha - a small town built on a desolated highland plain west of Lao Cai. Well-known for the century-old colorful market of the real mountainous people including the Dzao and the Flower H’Mong. They and the mountains seem to fall in a sleep and time stands still until Sunday mornings when the Bac Ha market occurs. After checking into hotel we can enjoy a walk to visit the Hmong King’ former residence and Ban Pho where villagers make the potent local maize alcohol.

Day 3: Bac Ha - Cancau market - Sapa (B, L, D)

Early this morning we catch our jeep for a 20km drive to Can Cau market, a basic one but full of the hill tribes with colorful customs. The morning CanCau Market is close to China border and home to many ethnic minorities such as Flower H’Mong, Nung, Dzao, they all come down from mountainous, isolated villages taking along with horses, buffaloes, cats, dogs, chickens for sales, at the market place you will be surprised and impressed by what they trade and their colorful clothes. You will have a real discovery on the cultures
and lifestyles of the hill tribes here because they live in a remote and isolated region and far away from the modern life.
We continue our trip to Sapa through Lao Cai border town, after having lunch and take a brief look at Ha Khau border gate, we drive up a 30km spectacular pass to Sapa, arrival in Sapa in the afternoon. At an elevation of 1,600 meters, Sapa was founded in the early years of the last century as a hill resort for French administrators when the heat on the plain became unbearable. After checking into hotel we can soak up the fresh climate as much as we want by spending our time wandering around this charming town and some legacies of the French period.

Day 4: Sapa - Cat Cat village- Ta Phin (B, L, D)

In the morning we take a short trek to Catcat village, the village of H'mong tribe in the valley, which remains very generally uncorrupted outside forces. Excellent views of the valley, the magnificent limestone and paddy fields of H'mong village. Enjoy some visits to local families and reach their customs. After the village down into the valley, the Cat Cat waterfall will be visible. A "White curtain" cascade appears, surrounded by flowery valley and deep-green pines. The rocks near the river and waterfall provide a marvelous place for picturesque photos and sunbathing during good weather…

In the afternoon our jeep will take us to TaPhin valley, around 15kms from Sapa. Here you will see the ruins of the old French Colonial Church by the left-hand side of this dirt road where we stop to get entrance fees to enter the village. Leave your jeep at the end of the dirt road then walk into the village to visit the rich culture and friendly tribes here we visit the villages of the Red Dzao and Black Hmong minority people, enjoy the view of the valley and visit the caves in the village's outskirts. Our guide will assist you communicating with the locals while visiting around the village. Take a ride back to Sapa for around 30 minutes and you must stop some times on the way to take photos of the fabulous valley. Many "Kodak moments" are awaiting for you along the way back to Sapa.

Day 5: Sapa - Phong Tho – Sin Ho - Lai Chau (B, L, D)

Our first stop today is Silver waterfalls and Heaven Gate on the way to Phong Tho. From Sapa to Phong Tho you pass through Binh Lu, up over the 1900 meter Tram Ton Pass , considered the most beautiful stretch of road in Vietnam . If you happen to be in Tam Duong on a Sunday morning, the town is bustling with activity as the local hill tribes gather for their weekly market day here. After lunch in Phong Tho, we keep driving to Lai Chau via Sin Ho. The drive to Lai Chau is stunning with tiered tea plantations and verdant rice terraces carved into the landscape. We spend the night in Lai Chau.

Day 6: Lai Chau - Dien Bien (B, L, D)

The loop continues on to Dien Bien Phu - the site of the decisive battle in Vietnam’s struggle for independence in 1954. On the way we see very few other travellers, mostly rural dwellers who are just as interested in finding out about our lives as we are of theirs.
After checking into our centrally located hotel we enjoy a walk around to see this fast growing town. Dien Bien is only 35km from the border with Laos . Being the last battlefield of the French during their war with the Vietnamese, which ended with the fall of the French colonial control in Indochina and the replacement of the US Army not so long, Dien Bien Phu now returned to be a green valley inhabited by dozens of the ethnic groups. Visiting the historical sites in Dien Bien will also make your trip more memorable. To name a few, they are Dien Bien Museum, A1 Hill, the shelter of the French general De Castries and the cemetery and memorial of the Vietnamese and French soldiers died during the fierce fighting. The main stop is Dien Bien Phu Museum which details the event in place. We also pay a visit to the old battle field where the lush vegetation grows behind many war relics including old French tanks and artillery pieces.

Day 7: Dien Bien Phu - Son La (B, L, D)


Today we leave Dien Bien Phu for Son La via Tuan Giao. On the way we visit villages, suspension bridges, take photos and stop over at Pha Din Pass. The most picturesque scenery is that of Pha Din Pass , which is well-known as a historical site during the French War in 1954, a high and dangerous pass at elevation 1,300, and a breathtaking view.
After checking in hotel in Son La, we pay a visit to the provincial museum, the nearby old prison and the Ta Toong cave which are some of this hill town's major sights. Have dinner and free time for relax.

Day 8: Son La - Mai Chau homestay (B, L, D)
Depart to Mai Chau, a beautiful valley inhabited by the Thai people in Hoa Binh province. On the way we visit Black Thai village and take photos, explore the hill of tea at the Moc Chau Plateau. After lunch in Moc Chau, continue on the way. Arrive in Mai Chau around late noon, check in house on stilts of White Thai at Lac village, and hike around the villages full of house-on-stilts and textile products of local people to learn about the routine life of Thai tribal people, who are believed to be homogenous with the Thai people in Thailand and Southern China . Amongst the 53 ethnic groups of Vietnam, they are considered one of the most civilized for the delicate dress, for beauty and elegance of women, and for nice, wide, spacious houses-on-stilts, and above all, for hospitality. We have a beautiful dinner and enjoy folk songs performed by Thai girls.

Day 9: Mai Chau - Hanoi (B, L)

After breakfast in Lac village, trekking around valley Mai Chau, visit Nhot village and Na Pho (White Thai), return to Hanoi, on the way stop to visit Hoa Binh hydro power plant, lunch end route. Arrive in Hanoi in the late afternoon.
